The End of America

Maybe some of the mistrust and fear that's been going around like the flu lately (not just here, in response to something new, but in general, all around me) is a product of something bigger going on around all of us, so big it's the proverbial elephant in the room.
Anyone and everyone, but especially those in the US, please read/watch/listen to this interview - and hopefully, read the book as well. I just ordered it this minute, don't know how I missed it until now (it's on the NYT best seller list), but I'm grateful this link got passed on to me. So I'm passing it on again.
I find politics fairly uninspiring most days, but I think it's very important that none of us are sleepwalking right now.
I've seen and been appalled by all of the things mentioned in this interview but never drew the kind of meticulous parallels Naomi Wolf does - I was of the view that she describes in herself initially, someone who would have viewed these parallels as an overstatement.
Someone sleepwalking.

Rapunzel, thanks for this post. I watched the “Democracy Now!” interview and it was chilling. This definitely seems like a must-read. I was checking it out on Amazon and on the page, there is a link to Wolf's blog where other interviews are listed. Anyone interested in hearing more should check out: http://www.amazon.com/gp/blog/A1EBZN0YXTZLS0/ref=cm_blog_dp_artist_blog
Thanks for the post!
Wow. Thank you Jeannie for posting this! How little society learns from the lessons of history.I've heard people blame terrorism for Bush's tactics as “necessary” measures- are people really that jaded? It also reminds me of the Big Lie, attributed to Joseph Goebbels the Nazi propaganda chief:
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
The mention of the blogger and government retribution really got me.
The abuse and torture at Guantantamo Bay and Abu Ghraib, and other US human rights violations is documented on Amnesty Intl's website, in case anyone reading this is interested.
I'm passing this on to Alison Piepmeier -she is a “Professional Feminist”, author, and Women's Studies professor, and a friend, in case she hasn't yet seen the interview or read the book. The link is to her blog, and she also has a website.
Thank you for posting this.
Thank you I'm going to look for it today and maybe (as usual) read it along side “The Other Side of Eden” about hunter gatherer society.
Jeannie!!!! Thank you so much for bringing my attention to this book. I'm going to read it!! and I think I will share it with the students at the high school my son attends. Of course I had to surf and look around for more on the subject. I just watched this. Naomi is SO BRAVE and strong and amazing. I'm a watching a bunch of different interviews. Thsi interviewer is one of the most hateful, disrespecful and ugly interviewers I've seen in a long time. I am so proud of Naomi for standing up to him and be brave enough to go on his show. I also watched Colbert's interview with her– I am actually a fan of Steven Colbert, but I think there is somethink subtly dangerous in making it all a joke– it lets us off the hook somehow. Laughter releases the endorphins, right? and then we don't feel a need to take action, maybe, because we don't feel that bad? hmmm.
I just went and posted this video of Naomi talking about her book to all my friends on facebook, many of whom are SO not political. I hope some of them watch it. I hope!
Loraine and Dawn, thank you both for those links!
