Who is the most caring person you know?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 04, 2009:
It seems to me that we're all built almost completely out of caring, maybe too much of it sometimes. What we care about varies from person to person and then we start caring about those differences and we get in big fights about it and have wars and do stupid things. Sometimes we let marketers and advertisers convince us that we need to care about their things and that we'll be happier by caring about those things but it isn't true. We invent religions to tell us what to care about and new age bookstores and fashion magazines. Some of us follow sports teams and care about them passionately - we just don't know what to do with the caring, there's so much of it, and we seem to need to put it somewhere. I think I'm in favor of a bit more apathy, kind of benign apathy, seconds on end of not being personally invested in anything in particular and letting all things just be what they are. Maybe I will start a religion of apathy - but of course, if the followers are any good at it at all they'll never show up.

Help

I forgot the address of the church….
Brilliant answer…..I do think that history could be read as entwining mass-manipulation strategies designed to pull on our caring strings…
I read this four times. It's beautifuly constructed, I thnk. Cheers, Jeannie. J x
Tink, I don't know that I always understand exactly what you're saying, but I always enjoy the reading!

Just sent on our merry way.

LOL! I so totally get it! We 'care' about things to death…literally. Thanks for pointing out the obvious I didn't even see until you put it into words…
Do you realize how hard it is to spend “seconds on end of not being personally invested in anything in particular”? I tried it for a minute and I just about pulled a groin muscle! ~grin~ almost worse for me then meditation!
Sublime, thank you our Lady of Apathy. I didn't care much for this question as it presupposed that you should rate caring in people. Your response was perfect for me, as I have had a sneaking suspicion for a while that caring is a very bad thing.
HaHa! I've been restless at my UU church the last six months or so. The constant exhortation to care more … about anything and everything … and you're just a slackass if you aren't constantly out there protesting and going door to door and walking the streets and writing letters to your congressman, etc. But I feel so little spirituality in the church, so little actual caring for each other. I feel guilty as hell for not being more of an activist as we are exhorted in weekly sermons and yet the backbiting and politics and gossip flowing through the congregation like a tsunami is exhausting!
